Motorcycles and motor scooters displacing less than 50cc may be ridden on a basic Class D driver license by a rider old enough to hold one. A road test may be taken at a DMV office, an approved DMV business partner, or a host site run by A.B.A.T.E. of Alaska, one of its regional chapters, or a Harley-Davidson dealership that DMV lists as an approved site.

- M2 Motor-Driven Cycle Permit (engine under 50cc, ages 14-15) (up to 49cc, separate credential) — Available with parental consent at 14 or 15 to operate a motor-driven cycle displacing less than 50cc. It requires the same written knowledge and vision tests as the Motorcycle Instruction Permit but no road test. A motorcycle or motor scooter under 50cc may otherwise be operated on a basic Class D driver license once the rider is old enough to hold one, with no M-class credential at all.

Alaska requires a helmet of anyone operating a motorcycle who is under 18, anyone riding on an instruction permit, anyone taking a motorcycle road test, and every passenger regardless of age. Only an operator who is 18 or older and already holds the M1, M2 or M3 license or endorsement may ride without one.
