Nevada issues a standalone motorcycle driver's license, or a motorcycle endorsement added to an existing driver's license, and treats the two as legally interchangeable routes to the same riding privilege. An applicant 18 or older may skip both the written and the driving test by completing a Department-approved motorcycle safety course through the Nevada Rider program; an applicant aged 16 or 17 must complete that same course but still sits both tests. Nevada's helmet law is universal, covering every rider and passenger of any age.

A moped is excluded from the statutory definition of a motorcycle and is not endorsement-gated: NRS 483.090 classifies it as an ordinary motor vehicle, so it is driven on a regular driver's license and Nevada issues no separate moped credential. Riding without the required license, endorsement or permit is a civil infraction under NRS 486.381 with no fixed statutory fine; a court finding a violation of the licensing requirement must let the person complete a course of motorcycle safety in place of any fine.

Required for all riders
The driver and passenger of any motorcycle or moped driven on a highway must wear protective headgear securely fastened on the head, meeting standards the Department is required to adopt. The requirement does not apply during an authorized parade, to an enclosed three-wheeled vehicle other than a trimobile, or, once a pending 2023 amendment takes effect, to an autocycle whose roof meets crash-helmet standards; that amendment awaits a notification from the DMV Director to the Governor that has not yet been made.
