The District of Columbia adds an 'M' motorcycle endorsement to an existing DC driver's licence, but DC DMV runs no motorcycle training or skills-testing programme of its own: since 2015 a resident must pass DC's own knowledge test and separately complete a motorcycle demonstration (skills) course accepted from any US jurisdiction. DC requires a helmet and eye protection of every rider and passenger, with no age exemption.

The motorcycle endorsement automatically transfers to a renewed or replaced DC driver's licence, including when the underlying licence had expired and the holder had to retake a knowledge or road test to renew it, so it carries no separate renewal fee or period of its own.

District of Columbia helmet law
Required for all riders
The DC Municipal Regulations require every motorcycle operator and passenger to wear a protective helmet and eye protection (goggles, safety glasses, or an approved windshield in place of goggles), with no age exemption — DC is one of a small group of jurisdictions with a fully universal helmet law. The Metropolitan Police Department's own published fine schedule sets the civil fine for failing to wear the required helmet, goggles, safety glasses or windshield on a motorcycle at $75, under ticket code T218; a lower $25 fine (T216) applies to the same failure on a motor-driven cycle, a distinct, lower-powered class of vehicle under DC law.
